As I previewed last week, Now, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz — founding members of Tom Tom Club and Talking Heads — are collaborating with CBGB co-owner Tim Hayes, singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson and Sabrina Post’s choir of children from Newtown, Connecticut, (location of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings) to record a single for the Newtown Youth Academy and the United Way of Western Connecticut.

The song follows Israel Kamakawiwoʻole’s arrangement for the ukulele, and it was recorded at Weymouth’s and Frantz’s home studio on Game Cock Island, Connecticut, just a few kilometres from Newtown. Frantz told Huffington Post that he and Weymouth left the New York City scene years ago to raise their family in a safer environment — a typical assumption about the community that made the shootings that much more of a shock to the locals.

While the project is all about a community working together on the healing process, it is not without a message about the need for societal change. Weymouth commented to Huffington Post: “We fetishize guns and we fetishize children in this country. But I think we love our children more than our guns.”
