Laura Loftus: Activism Fun with the Anti Kettling Kit

During a recent protest against the cuts in the UK the police became heavy handed and entrapped a group of peaceful activists into a police cordon known as a ‘kettle’.
Designer Laura Loftus was inside that kettle: “Being inside the kettle was incredibly frustrating, we were unsure what was going on, we didn’t know when we would be released and the police wouldn’t talk to us. It was through this experience I decided to put my design skills to the test and create something to help protesters in a similar situation.”

She created an ‘Anti Kettling Kit’ intended to be handed out to members inside a police kettle. The Kit includes Jammie Dodger biscuits, a booklet of information on protesters rights and what will most likely happen to them, instructions for a game to play inside the kettle and a placard to hold up against the police.

Laura: “Armed with the ‘Anti Kettling Kit’ a protester can feel more knowledgeable about the situation they have been placed in and the rights they have. They can share the biscuits amongst the group and turn the frustrating situation of being unlawfully detained into a protest itself by playing a fun game to pass the time.”
