Buzzfeed quotes the Marvel Comics press release:

Marvel Entertainment and Susan G. Komen for the Cure® are proud to reveal the complete lineup of all-new covers and the original advertorial that will be released in October to commemorate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout the month of October, the world’s most popular super heroes—Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Wolverine and more—will be featured on all-new variant covers with special pink-colored costumes available exclusively at comic shops.

Additionally, Marvel is proud to unveil a special one page advertorial running throughout its super hero comics in October to raise awareness of breast cancer in men. This advertorial will also be featured on www.marvel.com and distributed via social media channels.

Susan G. Komen For The Cure has had a rather hard year, receiving bad press for cutting funding to Planned Parenthood for breast exams (it has since been reinstated), and being accused of “pinkwashing”.

Both the Planned Parenthood fiasco and a recent decision by Komen to end stem cell research funding are widely considered to be indications of the organization’s close relations with Christian conservatives in the United States. Their reversal on Planned Parenthood angered that base. It will be interesting to see if this partnership, with a brand that just recently published “comics’ first gay wedding” will get the attention of groups like “One Million Moms,” who regularly call for boycotts of any brand that shows pro-gay tendencies.

See the other four comic book covers after the break.

It’s a serious question. This woman has the typical idealized body of a model, and despite the scary body painting, the portrayal is undeniably drawing attention to her curves and bare skin. When I think about eating disorders, I try to imagine looking in the mirror and seeing a funhouse…
