Where I live, it’s Mental Health Week. A time when we’re supposed to educate and sensitize ourselves about the pain that mental health issues can cause.

So it was not a good time for me to see these ads by Brazilian ad agency Artplan, for Iptran Road Peace Institute.

The copy says, “Drunk driving kills more than suicide. Actually they are exactly the same.”

No. They aren’t. There are many reasons people choose to end their own lives, but many of them are related to mental illness. Conditions such as depression can be profoundly debilitating, and have little to do with choosing to live recklessly, as drunk drivers do.

Suicide is the ultimate human tragedy. Drunk driving is an antisocial crime, which often kills others. I find the comparison offensive, without even bringing up all the research that says shock ads seldom work for social issues like this. Or the weak art direction.

Do better, guys!
