Violence
“As designers we have a social obligation to raise awareness of the horrors that less fortunate people face. Tibet has been illegally occupied by China since 1950 and yet only recently with the Olympic Torch fiasco have these attrocities been recognised by the popular radar...”
“...Please note that this society does not condone the discrimination or slander of any race, especially the Chinese, as they themselves have no idea what has been going on. Thus the sole purpose of this society is to raise awareness of the facts and not to make judgement upon anyone, let alone discriminate against them...”
DATA is currently working on its first project, collaborating with some of the most renowned designers, illustrators, digital artists, photographers and motion designers to create a book.
Some confirmed participants are:
Adhemas Batista, Alex Trochut, Bram Timmer, David Carvalho (Karpa) Greig Anderson, Pawel Nolbert (hellocolor), Pete Harrison (Aeiko), Mike Harrison (Destill), Si Scott, Justin Maller (superlover and depthcore), Diogo Potes (six letter word) etc.
Although at this moment in time, participants for the book in project 1 are by invite only.
-----
An interesting initiative, in my opinion they should open this to more people because there other designers who have a lot to share. Especially those in the social design field like Kate Andres, the team from Change, etc. :D

Sorry, but what is the “Chinese race”?
Posted by sum1 | 30-06-2008 08:37
Im sorry, my bad. It should just be Chinese, I got the info from the site itself and it’s my oversight for not correcting it. :D thank you.

Agreed, they should open the submissions up. I’d submit if it was an open call.

Yes, they should open the submissions up. but there are other projects like Peace for Tibet http://www.peacefortibet.blogspot.com/

Thanks for sharing the link. :D That’s pretty nice. Yea, by opening it up to other designers they’ll get a more diverse set of ideas. But those designers above are really good. I guess they wanted to screen the quality of work that will come out.

Hi,
Sorry the “Chinese Race” was a typo and we will try and correct it on cpluv as well. Thanks for pointing it out!
Project 1 runs until November 2008 roughly and you’re right it is closed to submissions, however Projects 2, 3 and 4 will all be open to the public and will all commence between November 2008 and January 2009. Full membership opens in October and everyone is invited to join! What we hope you realise is that we are not in it for the short run and that there will be numerous opportunities to collaborate with DATA.
For example, Peace for Tibet has contacted us and we have already discussed with them that they have an open invite into the next 3 projects and once our new site launches in October we will of course link to them. This is not about competing organisations but an ultimate goal, i.e. raising awareness of the issues going on in Tibet, so yes if in the mean time you wish to contribute please do visit Peace for Tibet, but then if you have time pop over to DATA in December to take part in some of our projects as well.
Also it would also be nice if people showed their support by buying the book (we are trying to keep the cost as low as possible but also ensure that the the sum the Tibet Foundation get (all the profit) will be large enough to do some good.)
Thanks for the post osocio, we appreciate it greatly!
Kind Regards everyone,
Rishi Sodha

maybe we should listen to the real Tibetans and know the truth.
Don’t judge anyone too easily

The People’s Republic of China is a brutal dictatorship but it is not illegally occupying Tibet. I realise this is a widespread misconception in the West and thought I would clarify a few things. The Tibetan region and plateau were neglected by the Chinese for quite some time (100 years prior to the 1950 uprising), giving the impression of independence to the outside world. Yet for hundreds, if not thousands of years the region was (and still is) considered part of the Chinese empire.
Nevertheless, Tibetans have a unique language, culture and spirituality that deserves to be practiced free of torture and fear. Under the current Chinese regime, this does not seem to be the case. There is spacial and cultural genocide in the works, ethnic cleansing, state sponsored terror and widepsread government and corporate corruption. But, again, there is nothing illegal about what the Chinese are doing - it is brutal, inhuman and deplorable, yes - but not illegal.
It is important to understand this distinction.
