Everything is right in this campaign about bodily autonomy

Everything is right in this campaign about bodily autonomy

A big hurray for this campaign from the Canadian Avalon Sexual Assault Centre. They proof that not only communication professionals know the rules of appealing communication, the fact that we often seek. Also applause for an organization that wasn’t blinded by passion for their cause, a common pitfall.

Avalon is a small local organisation from Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is a feminist organization working to eliminate sexual assault and abuse. The campaign, “I Don’t Owe You” was designed by local artist and filmmaker Krista Davis. It is meant for educational purposes to spark conversations on entitlement, consent, and bodily autonomy.

Avalon made a good choice with Krista Davis. She used images directly from the Avalon education programming and consultations. Accompanied with one clear message she succeeded in staying close to the target group. The campaign is therefore widely shared on Twitter and Facebook.

By the aforementioned pitfall is often made the mistake by telling too many messages. Not here, this is all and it is powerful: “No one is entitled to your body—you don’t owe anyone.”

Just because we made out…
Just because we texted…
Just because we’re lovers…
Just because you helped me…
“Doesn’t mean I owe you.”

The campaign was launched in 17 schools for Sexual Assault Awareness Month this April. It contains 5 posters and 4 short stop-motion animation videos.

Avalon:

In engaging with 17 schools we were honouring the staggering statistic that a woman is raped every 17 minutes in Canada. In creating these educational tools, as part of our prevention work, we hope to spark conversations around entitlement, misogyny, language, coercion, consent, and bodily autonomy.
