Teens have sex. That, we know for sure. More than 85 in every 1000 American girls get pregnant in their teens. And according to Bedsider, “seven in 10 pregnancies among unmarried women 18-29 are described by women themselves as unplanned.”
These fun and realistic PSAs take a heterosexual young woman’s point of view on just how awkward early and/or inexperienced coitus encounters are. The message, “You didn’t give up on sex. Don’t give up on birth control.” acknowledges that, when a woman feels ready for sexual life, she will put up with all sorts of shenanigans trying to get it right with her partner. But if she’s not ready to get pregnant, “getting it right” means using the right kind of birth control.
This is not a “safer sex” ad. It is entirely focussed on Bedsider’s mandate as part of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, although it does address STI-prevention on the site when it gets into comparison of BC methods.
Regardless, in an era of “abstinence-only” sex education failure, this is a step in the right direction.
