God speaks at the movies

God: I Love You. That isn’t a surprising tagline. It is the most used tagline ever. What really surprising is, is the fact that this campaign film was shown in 800 German cinemas for four weeks.

It is from Godnews. That is, how they describe it, “a melting pot of ideas with depth and new spiritual impulses about God, Bible, design, art and media. Fresh inspiration”.
More than 2.000.000 people have seen the film.

The film was first made for movie theaters and after that for online use. It was all funded by friends from the Godnews network.

Eva Jung, founder of Godnews: “Because I wanted that this little film has to be first in cinema (because the surprise is much larger if you see this commercial in cinema), I didn’t spread it through the web to get donations for to show it in cinemas. The idea was to collect some money from our friends in Hamburg, to show the film in some movie theaters in Hamburg. But some friends of my network asked what the costs are for their hometowns - because they wanted to show the film also in their movie theaters. I gave them a little guideline including the script and sent it to friends in different german towns. And after 6 weeks we got all the money.”

The target audience are possible believers and non-believers. Eva: “And last but not least ... also believers - to get something like a whack on the side of their head like “Oh my God, this is my God!”

Part of the campaign is the mouse-over fingerprint with proverbs from the bible. (English translation)

Transcript:

Translation:
Hi darling, welcome to the cinema! I know where you are ... have got you so worried the card ...
Today is not about the main movie ...
I think ... sometimes you think, I would not think of you ... Too busy and so ...
But thinking you ... Thinking of you all the time.
And whether you believe it or not: I know you for ages ... in any case much longer than you think ...
At that time, I am just happy for this moment ... If you sit here in the cinema ...
... and as you are now staring when you realize what’s going here right now ...

As long as delusions keep people happy and they respect other decent people who don’t agree with them ...

Making A Do-Ference at The Design Ethos Conference 2012

I recently had the privilege of being invited to speak and participate in the 2012 Design Ethos Conference/Do-ference at Savannah College of Art and Design. The creator of the conference, Scott Boylston, is a longtime friend in the relatively small socially conscious design community and I was delighted that…
