Is there a “good” way to use nudity in breast cancer awareness ads?

Posted by Tom Megginson | 23-10-2011 17:37 | Category: Health, Pinkverts, Women's Issues

Americans are constantly amazed by the amount of frank nudity to be seen in European advertisements. Women’s deodorant ads, fashion ads, pretty much anything. In magazines, billboards, transit. Despite the fact that pretty much everything is sexualized in America as well, the sight of an exposed nipple in mainstream public media is a cause for shock, censorship and even fines.

Which is why you will never see this ad in the United States:

Cancer du Sein - Is there a good way to use nudity in breast cancer awareness ads?

It says “Last year this woman showed her breasts. She saved her life.” The pose is not sexual or provocative, and the headline poke fun at the ad’s own exhibitionism. Personally, I prefer it to the glossy models showing less, because it is more normalizing and human.

What do you think?

I like the Pik Ribbon magazine story of “two friends” ( http://adland.tv/commercials/pink-ribbon-magazine-two-girlfriends-english-vo-2009-30-netherlands ) where there’s nudity but in such a matter of fact way of growing, growing up and then growing old it really resonates with breast “owners” if you will. It’s a shame the head is cropped off (they are different women) as that’s not pretty but the timelapse feel is nice.
