Life is Too Good

The big story in social advertising this month is the launch of a major HIV/AIDS public health campaign by the China Ministry of Health in conjunction with the United Nations. The campaign includes Public Service Announcements on television produced by Academy Award-winning documentary filmmakers Ruby Yang and Thomas Lennon.
In a country that has punished AIDS activists for perceived political subversion and cultural heresy, this is a remarkable development. Popular actors Pu Cunxin and Jackie Chan and folk singer Peng Liyuan appear in the spots. Although the ads are tame by European standards, the viewer can even see a same-sex couple in one of the spots, “Night,” and many of ads include the once-forbidden word “condom,” which was the justification for scuttling an aborted 1999 campaign against the disease. According to Reuters, this advertising “will mainly be shown on screens in buses, trains and planes, on the Internet, in entertainment venues, and on some state television channels.”
