Marriage Equality was, and still is, big news in the USA. Because of Proposition 8 and ‘Defense of Marriage Act’.

We at Osocio are strong defenders of Marriage Equality and we know there is long way to go. Remember that there are only 11 countries in the world where same-sex marriage is fully recognised: Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and Sweden.

Because of the recent news and the marriage equality profile picture action on Facebook I was curious about the campaigns from the recent years. We wrote a lot about it and I found many more on YouTube and Vimeo. Most of them come from the United States. I live in the first country where same-sex marriage became legal. But I can’t remember any social campaign from that time. Why so few other countries? Homophobia?

In some parts of the world campaigning openly is a dangerous thing to do. There are still countries where you can get the death penalty for being openly gay.

These thoughts and questions are the basis for this post. Because gays and lesbians can’t legalise their love in more than 200 countries. Many campaigns will follow in the coming years.

Do you know a campaign video not shown here? Let us know in the comments or by e-mail and I will update the post.

Two videos from Get To Know Us First (USA, 2009)

In California, marriage equality advocates are planning to air a number of public service announcements like this one. Directed by documentary filmmaker Gina Levy, it makes the argument that the “pro-family” rhetoric of those who supported the state’s ban on gay marriage rings particularly hollow for those who adopt children.

Australian Marriage Equality (Australia, 2012)

Australian Marriage Equality is campaigning to change the law so that same-sex couples are allowed to marry. The objective of the ad is to dismiss the case that marriage equality will have a negative impact and show the positive pro-marriage impacts it will have.

Thank You For Your Call (USA, 2011)

In 1935, the Social Security Act was created to help ensure the economic safety of America’s elderly. As of July 2010, the United States Social Security Administration does not recognize same-sex marriages or domestic partnerships as valid relationships. Consequently, thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender seniors are denied Social Security benefits every year.
Ineligible for Social Security surivors benefits, and faced with undue economic burdens, many LGBT seniors are often forced to give up their homes after losing their partner.

Branding a time-bound campaign, Forest & Bird did it.

It’s not new but it is not often used: branding for a time-bound campaign. The kind of branding used for temporary purpose. Forest & Bird did it recently for their Love Nature: Vote 2014 campaign. New Zealand’s largest independent conservation organisation wanted nature back on the political agenda. The future…
