My big book of beautiful breasts

Posted by Tom Megginson | 14-01-2011 19:21 | Category: Health

How’s that for a provocative headline?

It’s an accurate one. Australian-American photographer Peter Bruce has taken pictures of stars like Michael Caine, Elton John, Dustin Hoffman, Frank Sinatra, Peter Gabriel, Bill Cosby, Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Spacey and Vanessa Williams. But he says his wife (a breast cancer activist) and friends encouraged him to use his skill as a photographer to raise breast cancer awareness and funds.

The result is “Breasts are Beautiful”, a celebration of the female form in a fundraising photo book.

It becomes evident, if you browse the online samples of the spreads, that Bruce did not go the obvious “sexy” exploitative route, but captured a great deal of feminine diversity: young breasts, old breasts, small and large, even post-mastectomy.

This is the photographer’s statement:

“Breasts are beautiful.

We all have them and we are all susceptible to breast cancer.

In an effort to highlight the magnificence of breasts and the importance of their health, I am undertaking a unique project that compiles black and white photographs of anonymous nude breasts in a coffee table book format. Subjects will span all walks of life and will include everyday women, celebrities and politicians. My intent is to release the project in limited editions annually, with 30% of the net proceeds donated toward the purchase of mammography machines by clinics in need. It is my hope that these donations will impact the lives of many by providing preventative care for this unprejudiced disease.

The inaugural edition of the project will focus on the breasts of women (even though we men are susceptible to the plight of breast cancer as well). The format and subjects of the project may change from edition to edition but will all share the theme of nude breasts.

b for a cure is a coffee table book project by Peter Bruce focused on the beauty of the breast Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today (after lung cancer) and is the most common cancer among women, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1.3 million women will be diagnosed with breast cancer annually worldwide and about 465,000 will die from the disease.”

So, what’s your take on this project? The man clearly loves breasts, and is being very forthright about it. Is it a celebration of beauty, or more sexualization of serious health issues? Would you feel differently about this project if the photographer were a woman? Much to think about, and discuss.

Natural breast enhancement is all the rage now. And I believe the book is going to do more good to the trend than anything else! :) Cheers..
