Nominate Samuel for the Nobel Prize

Posted by Jeroen | 18-02-2010 12:26 | Category: Politics, Social aid, Third world

You just saw some Belgian politicians being asked wether they know Samuel.
The voice over explains:
Help our politicians, nominate this poor Bolivian farmer for the Nobel Prize in Sustainable Development en keep the concequences of global warming on the political agenda.

You can cast your vote for Samuel on NomineerSamuel.be

Broederlijk Delen (fraternal sharing) is a Flemish organization which empowers people in the southern hemisphere to take things in to their own hands.
Solving climate change is beyond the reach of these people and although Broederlijk Delen can help them in searching for practical solutions to the problems at hand (irrigation, reforestation, etc), high level political decisions are necessary. The signed petition will therefor be handed to José Manuel Barroso, Herman Van Rompuy en Yves Leterme on march 29 with the explicit demand to start implementing a European and global climate policy that makes a difference.

A nice and cost effective campaign that gets the word out about Broederlijk Delen and the work they’re doing. Amplified by the simple integration of social networks which make it easy to sign and share. And signing adds your profile picture to the site background - instant fame!
I do wonder whether the petition itself will make a difference. But I guess that’s besides the point. Besides urging your local (and not so local) politicians to keep the issue on the agenda you can make a real difference in real people’s lives, right now, by supporting Broederlijk Delen. Maybe they should have added a Paypal donate now button…

Kudos to Markee, who did this (and their previous campaigns for Broederlijk Delen) pro bono.

You can find last year’s campaign here.

I recently had the privilege of being invited to speak and participate in the 2012 Design Ethos Conference/Do-ference at Savannah College of Art and Design. The creator of the conference, Scott Boylston, is a longtime friend in the relatively small socially conscious design community and I was delighted that…
