Nothing’s Fair about Cervical Cancer

This switcheroo ad that appears at first to be a perfume advertisement ran during the Oscar ceremony directs.  At the end of the spot, viewers are directed to HelpPreventCervicalCancer.com, but there was another twist as well. The ad displays a glittering perfume bottle in front of an entranced woman woman, while a voice-over says: “Maybe it’s unfair to get your attention this way, but nothing’s fair about cervical cancer.” As attention getting as the ad might be, one blogger suggested that it might be “demeaning to women to suggest that we’ll only pay attention to our health if we’re tricked into thinking it’s all about something that smells nice.” Although the ad appears to be a public service announcement, it turns out to have been created by a pharmaceutical company to promote their vaccine for HPV.
