The chips were paid for by the Seattle Police Foundation as part of a police-led campaign. The stickers remind Hempfest attendees that there are still marijuana rules in effect, such as driving under the influence and a minimum legal age for use. Smoking in public is also, apparently, still prohibited. But the police are not handing out tickets for that just yet.
Seattle PD spokesperson Sergeant Sean Whitcomb told The Stranger‘s Ben Livingston, “Our department has taken a leadership role in public education, and it’s a responsibility we are taking very seriously. We are not looking to have a heavy hand when it comes to enforcement. That said, the rules are the rules, and we want people to voluntarily comply with them.”
Coolest. Cops. Ever.
UPDATE: The plan worked so well (or the event munchies were so intense) that the Seattle PD ran out of Doritos in 10 minutes! I have yet to see any acknowledgement from Frito-Lay of this free PR bonanza.
