Reddit is circulating this photo, purportedly a guerrilla campaign by unknown activists in Stockholm posted around Ericsson Globe Arena in advance of a planned appearance by American performer Chris Brown on November 19th. The photo is of Barbadian singer Rihanna, who in 2009 was horribly beaten by her then-boyfriend Brown.
The photo went public shortly afterwards, via a leak from within the Los Angeles Police Department, and has since resurfaced regularly as a reminder of Chris Brown’s seemingly unpunished crime. He pleaded guilty to felony assault and making criminal threats, in return for avoiding jail time. He was sentenced to community labor, five years’ formal probation and domestic violence counselling, and was soon able to resume his musical career.
In June 2010, Chris Brown was denied a visa to tour the United Kingdom because of his conviction. While not denied entry to Sweden, Brown is facing criticism even from his fellow performers.
Sean Walsh, from the Irish hip hop group The Original Rudeboys, says that they turned down an opportunity to open for Brown because of the assault. “Even though it’s a huge opportunity to play in the O2 with a major hip-hop star, and a substantial fee was offered, we are completely against Chris Brown’s assault on Rihanna.”
The Original Rude Boys have recently released a single, “Blue Eyes,” which is specifically about domestic violence
Earlier this year, CDs of Chris Brown’s latest albums were defaced in British HMV stores with this sticker:
The Swedish poster campaign is likely not pleasing to the victim, Rihanna, who did her best to suppress the story of the assault at the time it happened, and is since rumoured to have had an on- and off-again relationship with Brown. Which leads to questions about ethics and a victim’s right to privacy. With which I struggle myself, in posting the picture here.
