TreeHouse: Talk about autism

On the 6 August, TreeHouse, the national charity for autism education, launched a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of early intervention for children with autism and to tell parents and carers about talkaboutautism.org.uk.
The campaign contains three different images showing everyday situations that families living with autism can find challenging, appear alongside the message, “The longer a child with autism goes without help, the harder they are to reach.” 300 outdoor posters will go up across England, Scotland and Wales during August and adverts will also be placed in national and London press.

TreeHouse believe that through appropriate education, it is possible to transform the lives of young people with autism and the lives of their families. The campaign website offers families useful information about autism education and crucially, connects them with other families affected by autism.

To mark World Autism Awareness Day and the launch of talk about autism, Professor Tanya Byron has written a piece about why she thinks this community is so important for parents of children with autism.

Very good, and very true. We do a lot of work for the National Autistic Society, who have a much broader remit and so struggle to do work this simple or powerful (which is a shame).

Does anyone know if this was done pro bono?

These ads are excellent. I was diagnosed with autism as a toddler in the 80s, at a time where awareness was nearly nonexistant, and more specifically with Asperger Syndrome as an older child in the 90s. I was beyond lucky to recieve early intervention, as it has improved my life twofold. I somewhat recessed when I was 18, somewhat egged on by a new enviroment in college and emerging mental illnesses. But I am most likely much better off than I would have been if it wern’t for early intervention.

These ads explain this in a very simple way - the message would “click” in the consumer’s mind in a matter of seconds. I applaud both the organization and the agency for a job well done, and for doing a great service for all people on the spectrum.
