Werner Herzog, one of the most important film directors alive, directed a 30-minute short film, acting as public service announcement, that follows the emotional stories of families affected by the consequences of texting and driving. The film was funded by mobile providers AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon.
“I had my brother in my hand and all of a sudden my hand was empty ...” Xzavier’s sister is telling the story about her brother who dreamt would become an athlete.
The 35-minute film hopes to reach people with the message of what exactly happens when you text and drive, giving a human face to the tragedies that have resulted from people’s bad driving habits.
“This was the last text message I sent before I caused an accident that killed 3 people…” tells Chandler Gerber, who killed three children when he drove into a horse-drawn carriage carrying an Amish family.
“When you get a message while driving, it’s hard not to pick up your phone,” said Herzog. “With this film, we want to help make people more aware of the potential consequences of that action.”
The film, apart from being free to view online, will also be distributed to more than 40,000 high schools in the U.S.
Texting while driving is prevalent, makes you more likely to do other stupid things, and kills more kids than drunk driving! A study just published in the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics concludes that “nearly half of US high school students aged ≥16 years report TWD during the past 30 days, and these students are more likely to engage in additional risky MV behaviors.”
