Profile: GAIA stands up for animals

imageGAIA has been working for animal welfare and the right of animals to a decent life since 1992.  It is a matter of fairness and humanity. GAIA stands up for animals because they cannot defend themselves against human cruelty and abuse of power.

GAIA acts against the organised abuse of animals by means of campaigns and protest actions that have had a huge impact, in particular its campaigns against the animal suffering caused by the fur trade, by meat production, at cattle markets, in circuses and in laboratories. GAIA speaks out relentlessly against these forms of animal abuse.  We are assisted by members of the public who report cases of ill treatment to us, by scientific and legal advisors, and by our own investigators. GAIA also takes legal action to ensure that any breaches of existing animal welfare laws are punished, and endeavours to bring about new legislation that can offer better protection to animals in our country and in Europe.

But we do more than simply exposing and speaking out against animal abuse. GAIA also suggests solutions, to help our society become increasingly animal-friendly.

This is why GAIA’s actions and campaigns also aim to raise the awareness of as many people as possible, and let them know what they can do to help. GAIA’s numerous protest actions and campaigns have already obtained unprecedented results, but there is still much to be done.

The non-profit making organisation GAIA does not receive any funds or subsidies from the authorities. The income from membership fees and donations enables us to continue our daily struggle for the welfare of animals. Therefore, our heartfelt thanks to our many members and sympathisers. We cannot stress enough that without that help, our work would not be possible.
