Profile: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)

imagePeople for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 1.8 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world.

PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds, and other “pests,” and the abuse of backyard dogs.

PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns.

Because we rely entirely on donations and cannot afford traditional ads or branding campaigns, PETA also focuses a lot of energy on guerrilla marketing, in the form of colorful and provocative demonstrations such as our “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” Campaign, and word of mouth marketing projects such as our anti-KFC game Super Chick Sisters and our State of the Union Undress video.

Whatever the technique used for grabbing people’s attention, our goal is always to encourage individuals to watch our undercover investigations into animal abusing industries and consider for themselves that animals have the same capacity for suffering as we do and that they have a right to be free from torture and abuse.

PETA operates under the principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment, and in addition to our campaigns against animal abuse wherever it exists, we offer information and resources for anyone who is interested in living a more compassionate lifestyle.
