A snapshot of prison life in the build up to the annual hairdressing competition.

Cutting Loose is a 30 min documentary about an annual prison hairdressing competition. For most of the entrants, winning first place is the ultimate goal, but Francis, the current champion, has other objectives on his mind. He is due to be released soon and he worries life on the outside could prove unmanageable. For him, the competition is a glimpse at a life of freedom and responsibility.

“I’m trusted with a pair of scissors and I’m in here for murder”

A film by Finlay Pretsell and Adrian McDowall.
