‘Likeness’ Shows Struggles of Eating Disorders (TRIGGER WARNING)

A new short film portraying the realities and horrors of eating disorders is a way for some to heal, at least it is for director Rodrigo Prieto and his family after what they went through with anorexia.

“Likeness,” starring Elle Fanning, was co-created with Prieto’s 19-year-old daughter, Ximena, who battled anorexia in her early teens.

The innovative film navigates through a dark house of vacant, emaciated models who never once make eye contact with or acknowledge the camera. Ximena explained to The Daily Mail that the worst feeling of an eating disorder is when everybody ignores you. She intentionally directed the models attention away from the camera, presumably the point of view of Fanning, who winds up in a bathroom tearing off her skin in self-disgust.

“We are hoping it helps other people or families to open up and talk about what they’ve been feeling or experienced. . . also about these feelings that we all have, of feeling judged and isolated and alone in this society,” The Daily Mail reported Prieto said.

The video is a powerful example of the perceptions of body-image, self-image, self-worth and healing.

“I think it’s important to face those triggering things once you’ve, you know, recovered,” The Daily Mail reported Ximena said. “You can’t spend the rest of your life running away.”

What do you think?
