A hearing test disguised as a mobile game

Posted by Marc van Gurp | 15-04-2014 14:40 | Category: Health

Bekol: Sonar Invasion, a mobile game which is also a hidden hearing test.

Not only old people suffer from hearing deficiencies. 10% of the Israeli population has hearing problems according to Bekol, the Organization of Hard of Hearing and Deaf People.
They wanted to raise awareness to the issue, but had a hard time reaching the target audience. The solution was to use a medium young adults use most, their smartphones.

The came with Sonar Invasion, a mobile game which is also a hidden hearing test.
Using headphones, users were invited to listen and work out where the enemy torpedoes trying to destroy the submarine are coming from.

At the end of the game, users had a surprise coming: without realizing it, during the game they underwent a hidden hearing test which was developed in association with Bekol. If a hearing problem was detected the player was directed to call Bekol’s helpline directly from within the game.

It’s a serious question. This woman has the typical idealized body of a model, and despite the scary body painting, the portrayal is undeniably drawing attention to her curves and bare skin.

When I think about eating disorders, I try to imagine looking in the mirror and seeing a funhouse reflection of myself that is always bulgier and heavier than reality.  That’s the really scary thing about dysmorphia, as opposed to just wanting to lose weight: it’s a chronic mental illness that can kill, because people who have it can’t see what they’re doing to their bodies:

The wrong movie

This unusual campaign from Israel subjected a cinema full of people to a disorienting experience: suddenly thinking they were being shown a different movie that the one they had bought a ticket for.

File this under “First World Problems”, I suppose, but the audience reacted as if it was the end of the world. Fortunately, if the video case study is to believed, they appreciated the trick once they were told it was a simulation of what dementia feels like.

See the video after the break.

Branding a time-bound campaign, Forest & Bird did it.

It’s not new but it is not often used: branding for a time-bound campaign. The kind of branding used for temporary purpose. Forest & Bird did it recently for their Love Nature: Vote 2014 campaign. New Zealand’s largest independent conservation organisation wanted nature back on the political agenda. The future…

Can fundraising marketers recreate the #icebucketchallenge?

Yesterday, it finally happened. Somebody challenged me to the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS. If your internet connection has been broken all summer, it’s this year’s big meme. You can read about it here. To be honest, I felt that the movement had passed its high-water mark when I saw…
