Condoms ask humans to wrap up for endangered species

The Center for Biological Diversity: Condoms ask humans to wrap up for endangered species.

The Center for Biological Diversity explains how condoms can save wildlife:

The Earth’s population now tops 7 billion people. The rapid growth of our human population is pushing other species off the planet in what most scientists are calling the sixth mass extinction crisis. Yet this population explosion is too often ignored by the public, the media and even the environmental movement, while it continues to drive all the major environmental problems that plague our planet — including climate change, habitat loss, ocean acidification and resource depletion.

The Center has been distributing Endangered Species Condoms since 2009, using the cute, rhyming slogans and cool illustrations from Roger Pete to remind people at concerts, bars, universities, spiritual group meetings, farmers’ markets and local events around the United States.

While I doubt the condoms themselves get used much, the artwork makes a fine collector’s item. And for a longterm awareness campaign, having people hold on to the “literature” (and show it to their friends) is a pretty great result.

.@PETA needs to do more ads like these poaching ones

When PETA launches campaigns that sexually exploit women, disrespect human suffering, or just plain lie, I’m the first to call them out. But when they do something good, I’m not afraid to say so.

This anti-poaching campaign from Lowe, Singapore, is one of those times.

Calling out “fashionable” people for creating a demand for poaching threatened animals is a powerful statement. It may not influence the more out-of-touch consumers directly, but it does provide social pressure in the form of making others aware of the connection between luxury goods and disappearing exotic animals. It’s a shock ad, but the good kind, because causing the general public to reaffirm their disgust at the trade in certain animal products helps create a stigma. And since most “mainstream” people despise the rich and spoiled anyway, it’s not a hard sell.

Hunting jackets turned into animals under threat

Rohan Chhabra - Embodying ethics : Endangered

‘Embodying ethics : Endangered’ is an unique project from Rohan Chhabra. The project was exhibited at the 2013 London Design Festival.
After graduation Rohan worked as a Product Designer with sportswear label Nike for 2 years. Since 2013, Rohan decided to work independently on the project in this post.

Rohan: The project ‘Embodying ethics : Endangered’ aims to inform the issue of extinction of critical endangered species. By designing a series of hunting jackets that turn into representations of the animal under threat, reminds us of our complicity in the problem. As merely a fashion item, there is a sense in which the hunter jacket empowers without guilt, but then it reminds us of the ultimate source of this potency- the act of slaying a living creature and transforming it into an object, a decorative accessory, a trophy. Rather than condemning the hunter outright, they enable us to recognise the hunter in ourselves.

Can fundraising marketers recreate the #icebucketchallenge?

Yesterday, it finally happened. Somebody challenged me to the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS. If your internet connection has been broken all summer, it’s this year’s big meme. You can read about it here. To be honest, I felt that the movement had passed its high-water mark when I saw…

Does social media have the power to change the world?

Does social media have the power to change the world? The answer is yes. But there are still many obstacles, like censorship and literacy. Three-fifths of the world’s population is not connected. This video from the School of International Development at the University of East Anglia is a animated infographic…
