Topless advertising grows up   #whatnormalfeelslike

Posted by Tom Megginson | 17-09-2014 20:17 | Category: Pinkverts

Coppafeel, a British charity promoting self-examination to catch breast cancer early, has been a regular subject on Osocio for some time. But while they have experimented with a number of tactics, from sexy to silly, I think this is the first time I’ve seen one of their campaigns address their message with such maturity.

The Telegraph reports that this campaign is ads being displayed outdoors in London’s Westfield White City, St Enoch in Glasgow and the Cavern Quarter in Liverpool, on digital boards. And because they are an exercise in “desexualizing” breasts, they are not expected to be banned by UK advertising censors.

Code Red - Paramedics Fair Pay Campaign

Ambulance Employees Australia of Victoria: Code Red - Paramedics Fair Pay Campaign.

We can’t help looking at ambulances. It’s a morbid, human-rubber-neck-nature thing I suppose. The high speeds, flashing lights and sirens aren’t bad attention grabbers either. That’s why the Code Red campaign by the Ambulance Employees Association of Victoria is doing a great job at getting under Premier Dennis Napthine and the Victorian Government’s skin. For the last 20 months on the streets across the State of Victoria, Australia, the majority of ambulances you pass or that speed past you have hand written, activist messages asking for better pay and working conditions for ambulance crews (affectionately known as “Ambos” in the local slang).

Check out some examples below, curated from their Code Red Facebook page. What do you think? Are the messages a pleasant surprise which connects you with the plight of the Ambos inside or do you feel it is inappropriate to deface these serious, life-saving vehicles with industrial action messages? Would this tactic change your vote?

Is this eating disorder ad too sexy?

It’s a serious question. This woman has the typical idealized body of a model, and despite the scary body painting, the portrayal is undeniably drawing attention to her curves and bare skin.

When I think about eating disorders, I try to imagine looking in the mirror and seeing a funhouse reflection of myself that is always bulgier and heavier than reality.  That’s the really scary thing about dysmorphia, as opposed to just wanting to lose weight: it’s a chronic mental illness that can kill, because people who have it can’t see what they’re doing to their bodies:

Branding a time-bound campaign, Forest & Bird did it.

It’s not new but it is not often used: branding for a time-bound campaign. The kind of branding used for temporary purpose. Forest & Bird did it recently for their Love Nature: Vote 2014 campaign. New Zealand’s largest independent conservation organisation wanted nature back on the political agenda. The future…

Can fundraising marketers recreate the #icebucketchallenge?

Yesterday, it finally happened. Somebody challenged me to the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS. If your internet connection has been broken all summer, it’s this year’s big meme. You can read about it here. To be honest, I felt that the movement had passed its high-water mark when I saw…
