If you knew your words were hurtful, would you say them again?

If you knew your words were homophobic, would you say them again? Learn how to be an LGBT positive parent.

Full disclosure: I wrote these ads as a personal volunteer project, in partnership with my sister-in-law, Bonnie Robinson, at Ottawa’s YOW! Productions. We had been looking for a pro-bono job to do together, and Bonnie had been involved with the organization. She shot these two PSAs on an absolute shoestring, with volunteer actors and most people’s time donated. I’m sharing them here because as parents we really need to stop enabling a culture of casual homophobia.

The first PSA is for parents of LGBT children who haven’t come out yet. The quotes are based on actual surveys that Etc. did with LGBT youth, about things they had heard that had hurt them and the underlying message of seemingly-innocent comments:

You Don’t Say Campaign is a collaboration between a student group named Think Before You Talk and the Blue Devils United athletics program at Duke University in North Carolina, USA. The campaign seeks to raise awareness around the misuse of language that relates to the LGBTQ community and gender issues.

According to their Facebook Page:

The “You Don’t Say Campaign” seeks to raise awareness around the misuse of language that relates to the LGBTQ community and gender issues. These words dehumanize and marginalize many within the Duke community and beyond and it is important to understand why.

Our Goal: Foster dialogue on the intersection of language and gender and sexual identities.

Words mean something. Think Before You Talk.

The campaign takes a poster format, but beyond campus the captioned photographs are a perfect match for social media. I’m not thrilled by the photography, which could have been much more striking, but the student models certainly have their hearts in it. It’s good to see youth take responsibility for the social implications of the words their peers use so casually.

Branding a time-bound campaign, Forest & Bird did it.

It’s not new but it is not often used: branding for a time-bound campaign. The kind of branding used for temporary purpose. Forest & Bird did it recently for their Love Nature: Vote 2014 campaign. New Zealand’s largest independent conservation organisation wanted nature back on the political agenda. The future…

Can fundraising marketers recreate the #icebucketchallenge?

Yesterday, it finally happened. Somebody challenged me to the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS. If your internet connection has been broken all summer, it’s this year’s big meme. You can read about it here. To be honest, I felt that the movement had passed its high-water mark when I saw…
