World Contraception Day PSA tells the awful history of not getting pregnant   #WCD2014

Before the latex condoms, the hormonal birth control pill, and other safe and effective forms of contraception became legal and commonplace in the 20th century, women relied on many folk remedies to prevent pregnancy. Many of these were actual herbal abortifacients, but some others were pure superstition.

This video by Engender Health, for World Contraception Day, is an amusing review of some of the stranger attempts at birth control through the ages. But it ends with a very serious message:

Is this anti-FASD ad about love… or shame?

Is this anti-FASD ad about love… or shame?

How can I criticize a social marketing campaign that’s trying to prevent a fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD)? It’s certainly an important social cause. But so is treating women with respect. Bear with me here.

I spotted this ad at my neighbourhood liquor store. Where I live, in Ontario, Canada, alcohol is sold by a government monopoly. As part of their corporate social responsibility, they host campaigns by various alcohol-related not-for-profit organizations.

This one, FASworld.com, presents a simple message: FASD is 100% preventable, so just don’t drink any alcohol if you’re pregnant, and we can easily wipe it out.

Simple, eh? Well, perhaps not.

“Stop Telling Women to Smile” is a street art series by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. She says the work “attempts to address gender based street harassment by placing drawn portraits of women, composed with captions that speak directly to offenders, outside in public spaces.”

“The project consists of a series of portraits of women, she explains, “women who I have sat talked with about their experiences with harassment. The portraits are designed into posters, including text that is inspired by the subject’s experiences. And then I wheat paste.”

The project started in Brooklyn in the fall of 2012, and will gradually include many cities and many women participants. The picture above is of the artist in LA. Below, you’ll see more of her work:

Miss Representation #NotBuyingIt app

#NotBuyingIt is the hashtag used by the social media feeds for Miss Representation (both the film and the movement) to call out sexism in advertising and media. And now, it’s an App as well.

Available for iPhone, it allows users to “create, join and win campaigns against sexism in the media.”

Branding a time-bound campaign, Forest & Bird did it.

It’s not new but it is not often used: branding for a time-bound campaign. The kind of branding used for temporary purpose. Forest & Bird did it recently for their Love Nature: Vote 2014 campaign. New Zealand’s largest independent conservation organisation wanted nature back on the political agenda. The future…

Can fundraising marketers recreate the #icebucketchallenge?

Yesterday, it finally happened. Somebody challenged me to the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS. If your internet connection has been broken all summer, it’s this year’s big meme. You can read about it here. To be honest, I felt that the movement had passed its high-water mark when I saw…
