A True Story is a moving one

A True Story is a moving one

In 2011, Irish couple Mary and Tony Heffernan lost their five-year-old daughter Saoirse to a disease you’ve probably never heard of: Battens Disease is an extremely rare inherited disorder of the nervous system that is almost always fatal. Tragically, Tony and Mary’s three-year-old son Liam is also afflicted.

The Heffernans found very few resources on Battens Disease when their daughter was diagnosed, and founded Bee for Battens: The Saoirse Foundation to assist families like their own. Battens Disease is so rare, many doctors are unaware of it.

“A True Story” is an emotional 45-second video created to support the foundation’s “online campaign for raising awareness & supporting those affected by Battens disease.”

The illustrations and animation were created by artist Mick Minogue. Director Albert Hooi then digitally arranged hundreds of photos against music by singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan. I like the nostalgic, arts & crafts feel. Like any good true story, it moves the audience. When I passed this video around, everyone visited the website to learn more.

Last month the Heffernans received the news that despite experimental brain treatment, Liam’s condition will continue to deteriorate.
