How advertisers failed women in 2012


Miss Representation, the movement behind the documentary about sexism in media by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, recently released this compilation of sexual objectification of women in advertising in 2012:


Most of these campaigns will be familiar to anyone who follows big brand advertising. Not all are from 2012, however. The Burger King “It’ll Blow” ad is actually from 2009, and was produced by a local agency in Singapore (CP+B ended up taking heat for it anyway.) The Fiat ad, although hitting its widest audience in the 2012 Super Bowl, debuted online in 2011. These are small points however, as the general trend of brand advertising is moving towards more sexualization, not less.
