New successful abortion fund began with a single tweet

This video is the result of a remarkable spontaneous action which began with a tweet last week. It was a reaction on Donald Trump’s far-reaching anti-abortion measure, which cuts the 575 million funding of NGO’s that support women in lower-income countries with family planning and safe abortion.

The first tweet brought some 2,500 euros within a few hours. Writing this blogpost the counter nearly hits the 40,000 euros. A sign that the problem was taken seriously by many people.

The idea for the funding came from Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Lilianne Ploumen. She is also the one that explains in the video, somewhat shy, what the fundraising goal is.

This has far-reaching consequences. For all those women who have to make, if they want to have a child, a choice, but also for their husbands and children and society as a whole. Banning abortion does not lead to fewer abortions. It leads to more irresponsible practices in back rooms and more maternal deaths.

The video is simple, the minister a little shy, the hastily built website doesn’t contain much information. And that’s not an issue here. There is no need for a slick marketing campaign. International solidarity and women rights appears to be much stronger. Pity though that we need Trump to realize this again.
