Yesterday was “No Bra Day”. The French Instagram-aggregating blog Boobstagram declared it so. And apparently, you women could support breast cancer awareness by posting “tasteful” pictures of your unsupported breasts on Instagram:
“Obviously women do not need a predetermined date in the year to go without a bra. But behind No Bra Day is something else: A cause to defend, a commitment to feel more free. Whether it’s a feminist commitment to want to feel unrestrained by a bra, or whether you just want to let your body breathe or want to support prevention and awareness of breast cancer.” [Roughly translated using Google and Canadian high school French]Ah, yes. The feminist cause…
A day later, a search of #nobraday on staticgr.am doesn’t yield a massive outpouring of (pardon the pun) support for this particular brand of slacktivism, beyond the expected attention-seeking behaviour by young women. It does, however, also show a pretty healthy cynicism cropping up:
Really, folks. Cancer is not sexy, and it is not a game.
Thanks to Monica for the tip.
