Peace One Day 2012: Global Truce

10 years ago, actor and visionary Jeremy Gillerey was pretty concerned about the state of the world.  He turned his concern into action.  In 1999 he began creating Peace One Day and since it has truly taken off.  On September 21st each year Peace One Day is calling for and working towards a day of ceasefire and non-violence.  Supported by over 200 Non-Government Organizations including the UN, it has become an opportunity for life-saving activities and action by individuals worldwide.  This year it is promoting the Global Truce Campaign. The campaign hopes that it “will be the largest global reduction of violence ever recorded on one day – and the largest ever gathering of individuals in the name of peace.”

The Campaign aims to persuade nations and Armies to choose peace for one day, and thus it is calling for ceasefires and stop in fighting for the 21st of September.  The global campaign is mostly featured on the Peace One Day website which compells visitors to participate on many levels.  To date over 100 million individuals have participated in events.

Here are the main methods to participate.

– through social media platforms such as facebook, twitter and youtube.  Participants will be compelled to become online advocates for Peace.
– person by attending an amazing concert in London (Wembly Arena) featuring Elton John and James Morrison, Art exhibit, and “Insight” business events.
– by becoming entrepreneurs of peace and plan their own local Peace One Day event on MeetUp. The website offers some pretty awesome ways to make Peace happen.  Dance, music, film, play etc.

For me this is perhaps the best part of the campaign as it mobilizes the masses to consider how they can become peacebuilders where they are. Here is the Peace One Day Global Events Map from Google Earth

Things to love about this campaign:

1. While the campaign has the mandatory “experts” like celebrities, paid talking heads, academics, and public leaders promoting Peace One Day such as: Jude Law, Ban Ki Moon, Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), Steve Kilelea etc. it holistically approaches a global effort for peace. The campaign not only targets influencers and famous change makers, but also as built key alliances with civil society and grassroots.

2. Students Coalitions: By mobilizing the next generation for peace the campaign is building on the UN mandate for 2012 “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future”

3. The NGO Coalition: by partnering with non-governmental organizations in its strategic coalition Peace One Day is allowing the people on the ground to make some noise. A group of over 200 (and counting) NGO’s already working in the field of peacebuilding, human rights, good governance etc. have pledged to promote peace on September 21st. 2012.  You can visit the site here, or just wait as some of the best campaigns will be featured here all week.

4.  The Institute for Economics and Peace will crowdsource information from participants and measure impact. From the IEP website, the study will “compile and collate in-country data relating to the observance of the Global Truce within civil society and amongst parties to conflict. It will specifically look at the global impact and the economic benefits of a day of Global Truce.

Perhaps it is clear from my tone that I am very excited and pretty biased towards Peace One Day Campaign.  I love inclusive, collaborative and multi-social segment effort to promote peace; and therefore for me this campaign get a 10!
