“Pick a Potty” for World Toilet Day

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is raising awareness of the global need for safe pooping with a photo contest. Leading up to World Toilet Day on November 19th, they have asked readers of their blog to send in photos of sanitary facilities from around the world. Twelve finalists have been chosen, and readers can vote on their favourite “pottie” picture here. Winners will be announced on the big day. I imagine the photographer will be flushed with pride. Here’s the serious message being carried by the contest:

The IFRC set up Water and Sanitation Emergency Response Units (ERUs) as part of its disaster response system. Since 1996, 57 water and sanitations ERUs have been deployed around the world. Without proper water sanitation practices including hand washing and toilets, deadly diseases such as cholera can be spread. The Water and Sanitation ERU helps get clean water to people in disaster zones to prevent the spread of disease and illness.
