President Obama urged to “Legalize Love”

With the news that the the United States Democratic Party has adopted marriage equality into its 2012 platform, gay rights are now officially an election issue.

It’s been a tumultuous year in US politics, with social issues like healthcare, women’s reproductive rights and gay rights dominating the conversation. This latest move is likely to further polarize the right ad left, as conservative “moderates” and some “traditional” liberals find themselves on the wrong side of the battle lines.

Before the Dems made it official, however, they were urged on by Legalize Love, a marriage equality group that made its message to the President clear by incorporating his campaign logo and organizing grassroots support.

They weren’t acting alone. A brand new survey by Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press indicates that support for gay marriage among committed Democrats has jumped to 65% today, more than double the percentage that is opposed (29%). That’s in comparison 50% of Democrats favouring allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally, and 42% were opposed, during the last Presidential election.

With politics, culture and brands increasingly showing support for equal marriage, it may well be that the tipping point on the issue has been reached and breached in the United States. But expect a lot of backlash in the short term.
