The fight against racism gets personal

The debate over building a new mosque close to the site of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Centre has divided Americans and spurred a new round of anti-Muslim racism and fear.

Today, a grassroots coalition of American Muslim groups launched a collaborative project, “My Faith, My Voice”, in which everyday Muslims from all walks of life post videos on YouTube to let their countrymen know what they’re really all about.

Will it work? I’ve always believed that it’s easier to hate “tribes” than it is people. If racists reduce humans into stereotypes, then the diversity and personal touch of the campaign at least presents the individual realities.
