It’s not easy for older authority figures to reach youth through digital media, but Vice President Of The United States Joe Biden is giving it the old college try.
The video is predictably awkward, but Vice-President Biden actually does an excellent job of playing himself. (Unlike the rather annoying Mr. DeVine.)
And, as someone who works with lots of government clients in my own country, I give a big “cheers” to the White House for portraying a somewhat-realistic college party where alcohol is omnipresent in Red Solo Cups. They could have easily listened to voices (and I’m sure there were plenty) who told them they could be seen to be encouraging underage and binge drinking. After all, most American college kids don’t reach the American drinking age of 21 until they’re near graduation.
But alcohol is a big part of the problem in American hookup culture on college campuses. Students do drink underage, and in excess, and young people watching out for each other when they’re too inebriated to consent to sex is the whole point of this PSA.
We still have a long way to go in dismantling the rape culture that persists on campus and elsewhere. But this is a step in the right direction. When you think that, just 20 years ago, people were laughing about a President Of The United States having a sexual affair with a 22-year-old intern, it’s pretty obvious that there has been progress in the way people perceive consent.
